The wind across your beer bottle blows a note like a boat off in the thick misty night but all I hear are your words falling slow, like honey. And I’ve forgotten what you said then but I’ll never forget how your hair moved like water and I wanted to touch you; I could feel my fingers behind the curve of your ear. I wanted to make you a gift of a small stone, round and worn smooth like the stone I feel turning within me like a slow undercurrent of you. We stepped down to the cold sand and I wanted to feel your breath on my lips and the salt on your tongue, but I carried the thought like a stone in my pocket.

I remember when…

The fish in your bucket moves while you talk with your hand in the air.
I look at my feet and think to put on my shoes.

You throw your line, like David, at the river.
We sit and wait as the water moves, white on blue.

The sun hot on my head; clear beads slowly descend.
I step in the river to get my line free.

I trace the taut, thin line, swimming down to the mossy cold
As the great birds cross the sky, white on blue.

Metal held like a fuse, reaching out to enter the air,
Water drops, touch my eyes, and look at you.

The trees bend in the windbreak; you look at me and hesitate.
Then you slowly rise, embrace the word, and move away, white on blue.
